Silae Vanua Market Vendors Association (MVA) is a civil society organization that represents 3,000 market vendors at the Port-Vila Central Market in Vanuatu. Established on December 5, 2014, it operates under the name “Silae Vanua,” meaning “Help the Island.” The association, registered with the Vanuatu Financial Service Commission, VANGO, and the NGO desk, serves as an umbrella organization for 35 sub-associations from Efate Island and nearby islands like Nguna, Pele, Emau, Mosso, and Lelepa.
The organization is led by an executive team elected every four years, with the most recent election held on July 13, 2022. The executive team collaborates with a board of 35 members, meeting monthly to oversee the association’s activities. Silae Vanua MVA partners with government agencies and NGOs such as the Department of Women’s Affairs and ADRA to implement initiatives aligned with the National Gender Equality Policy (NGEP), focusing on eliminating violence against women, enhancing women’s economic empowerment, and fostering community-driven climate resilience.
Silae Vanua MVA’s activities primarily occur on Efate Island and nearby communities like Nguna, Saama, Malavau, and Epau. The association has successfully distributed 23 water tanks to communities, funded by FALE for disaster relief, and continues to empower market vendors through training and advocacy, promoting economic resilience and social well-being.
