The Vanuatu Women’s Centre (VWC) is an independent civil society and women’s rights organization based in Port Vila, established in 1992. The current phase of their program, funded primarily by Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) and New Zealand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT), runs from July 2021 to June 2026, with additional support from Oxfam for specific projects. VWC coordinates a national program offering prevention and response services, including five provincial branches and a rural volunteer network of Committees Against Violence Against Women (CAVAWs). These volunteers conduct community awareness activities and support women and children facing violence. VWC also works with a network of trained male advocates who promote women’s human rights. The organization addresses key strategic areas under the National Gender Equality Policy (NGEP), including eliminating discrimination and violence against women, enhancing women’s economic empowerment, advancing women’s leadership, strengthening gender mainstreaming, and fostering gender-responsive disaster resilience. VWC collaborates with various government agencies and NGOs for community education and awareness activities and strives to reach most Vanuatu islands through its branches and networks. Their activities span across multiple area councils and villages in Vanuatu, including islands like Santo, Pentecost, Malekula, and Tanna.
